The Digital HBCU Art Collections Directory will be available in this section of the website by the end of 2026, coinciding with America's 250th birthday celebration. We selected this significant date to align with the nation's semiquincentennial, which the Smithsonian is uniquely positioned to commemorate as America's keeper of art, science, history, and culture. This project embodies the Smithsonian's mission for the 250th anniversary to "celebrate the nation's successes, contemplate the consequences of our history, commemorate the sacrifices of those who have worked to advance the nation's highest ideals, and commit to advancing our multicultural democracy." By digitizing and making accessible the rich art collections from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, this initiative supports the Smithsonian's vision to reach every corner of the United States while inspiring collaboration, discovery, and contemplation on what it means to be American.
